ROLE OF RESEARCH IN SUCCESS OF IMG’S, Maryam Zahid

Abstract

The process of getting matched in a residency program is quite
challenging for IMGs due to very high competition and increasing
expectations from program directors. Although, the scores in your
usmle exams and clinical skills in your desired speciality are main
predictors of shortlisting criteria by program directors, another thing
that can add value to your personal statement is your research
experience. Participating in research shows a program that you are
resourceful, skilled, can work in a team and can finish something that
you start. However, the decision of getting involved in research should
be based on your motivation and passion rather than only to showcase
something extraordinary on your application. The importance of
research has further increased after the usmle step 1 scores have been
replaced by pass/fail criteria. In this case, research experience and
publications give program directors another way to evaluate
applicants
